CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Drop-Dead Gorgeous

Vega searched the graveyards for zombies, ready for a fight. If she found a kyonshi, she was prepared to destroy it, not just for keeping her from Kenji’s grave, but for taking Kenji from her. It didn’t matter if it was his killer or some other zombie. She wanted revenge.

Unfortunately, Vega found no sign of paranormal creatures from the Faerie Realm at the first two cemeteries. At the third graveyard, she stumbled upon a couple of students from Encantado Charter Academy making out. Living up to her reputation as a wicked schoolteacher, she scared them off by threatening to give them detentions.

Outside the fourth, an unsettling feeling prickled the hairs on the back of her neck. This had to be it!

She quickly ducked into some bushes just outside the cemetery gate, watching the graves for any sign of movement. When the breeze changed direction, she caught the faint scent of death. It wasn’t the slow decay of corpse flesh permeating through the earth. Nor was it a recent death like what she’d previously stumbled upon at Yorba and Fairhaven Memorial Park. She inhaled the cloyingly sweet perfume of decay. It had to be months old, probably that of a walking corpse.

She imagined ripping the throat out of one of her enemies with her teeth. If she consumed one of Kenji’s killers, revenge would be sweet indeed. She smiled to herself at the thought.

Twigs snapped in the distance. Sluggish footsteps echoed in the silence of the night. As soon as she figured out the zombie’s location and ensured there was only one, she intended to stalk it as her prey. She scented ancient death in the air, a spicy butterscotch reminiscent of the toxin that had been eating at Kenji. It had to be the scent of kyonshi poison mingling with decay, but she couldn’t see the source even with her enhanced vision.

A shadowy blur streaked through the sky. Vega tried to fix her gaze on it, but it was too fast. Another wraithlike silhouette flitted just above the graves.

That’s when Vega realized she wasn’t alone. The Witchkin Council was there as well. The building hunger in her belly sank into a lump of anxiety. Vega warded herself and enhanced her glamours. She kept to the shadows along the fence line so she could slip away without notice.

It wasn’t going to look good for her if the Witchkin Council caught her at another scene of a crime. Especially not after what she’d learned from Gregory Knight about the deaths that had occurred at her previous schools. The council had whispered that she was a person of suspicion.

Now she knew why.

Vega returned to Encantado Charter Academy in disappointment. She didn’t know anything more about her enemies other than that these deaths in graveyards had been going on longer than she had first suspected. Most likely kyonshi were the particular zombie at work here. The timing was right.

Kenji had been bitten only a year before the kyonshi must have escaped from the Unseen Realm into the Morty Realm.
